Do we still need the renal biopsy?

Glomerular Diseases are an important cause of chronic renal failure. These are not readily diagnosed by clinical or laboratory features.  The renal biopsy is also important in renal transplant dysfunction, where the causes are also not readily apparent. The renal biopsy is also used to evaluate causes of renal failure that may involve the tubulointerstitial or vascular compartments. This is a complex diagnostic evaluation that requires not only a renal pathologist but also an accomplished renal pathology laboratory.
