The Renal Biopsy

Growth

There has been a marked increase in renal biopsies over the last 10 years.

Average Renal Bx Numbers

1975 to 1990 – 175/yr/renal pathologist
1990 to 2000 – 250/yr/renal pathologist
2000 to 2008 – 325/yr/renal pathologist

Why the growth? We believe several factors have led to this increase. Not the least of which is the spring loaded biopsy gun and ultrasound, which have improved safety and yield.  Other factors include the availability of better treatments, increased involvement of interventional radiology and the internet effect. Patients are more educated than ever by accessing detailed information on the internet.
